TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) is a widely loved tool in the birth world. Our maternity-specific TENS machines are designed to help you manage early labor at home and stay active for longer. It’s a safe, simple, and effective way to support your body’s natural ability to birth.

How does TENS support you?

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) is a non-invasive way to manage the sensations of birth. By placing electrode pads on your lower back, the TENS machine works with your body in two powerful ways:

  • The "Gate Control" Theory: Your brain can only process a certain amount of information at once. The TENS machine sends a gentle "flood" of harmless electrical impulses to your nerves. This creates a busy signal on your nerve pathways, effectively "closing the gate" and reducing the number of pain signals that reach your brain.

  • Boosting Natural Endorphins: These gentle pulses encourage your body to release its own "feel-good" chemicals, endorphins and enkephalins. These are your body's natural pain relievers, helping you stay calm, relaxed, and focused.

How to hire your Elle Tens machine

Simple, stress-free, and delivered to your door.

  1. Book Your Dates: We recommend booking your hire to begin at 37 weeks of pregnancy to ensure it’s tucked in your hospital bag and ready when you are.

  2. Choose your hire period: We offer 3 or 5 week hire options (payment plans available)

  3. Receive Your Kit: Your hire includes the Elle TENS unit, a fresh set of high-quality electrode pads, spare batteries, and an easy-to-follow instruction guide.

  4. Birth with Confidence: Use the TENS as long as you need during your labour, at home, in the car, or at the hospital. (Tip - Tens is great to use for after pains too!)

  5. Easy Return: Once your pēpi has arrived and you’re settled, simply pop the unit back to us using the provided return instructions.

  6. Once Returned: We will refund your bond

TENS Machine Hire: Terms & Conditions

1. Hire Period Options: At the time of booking, please select your preferred hire duration:

3-Week Hire: Designed to cover 1.5 weeks on either side of your estimated due date.

5-Week Hire: Ideally beginning at 37 weeks gestation

Confirmed Dates: Your specific start and end dates will be confirmed via email upon booking.

2. Returns & Extensions

  • Return Date: The TENS unit and all accessories must be returned or posted back by the end date of your chosen hire period as stated in your confirmation email.

  • Extensions: If you wish to extend your hire period, you must contact us to check availability in case of clashes with other bookings. Extensions are charged at $10 per additional week.

  • Late Returns: Timely returns are essential so we can fulfill our commitments to other waiting families.

3. Bond & Equipment Care

  • Security Bond: A refundable bond of $[Insert Amount] is required at the time of booking.

  • Condition: The TENS unit, leads, manual, and case must be returned in the same condition they were received.

  • Electrodes: The sticky electrode pads are yours to keep or dispose of after use for hygiene reasons.

  • Loss or Damage: If the unit is lost, stolen, or damaged beyond repair, the full replacement cost (less the bond) will be invoiced to the hirer.

4. Cancellations & Refunds

  • Change of Mind: Full refunds (minus a small admin fee) are available if you cancel before your 37-week dispatch/pickup date.

  • Non-Use: No refunds are given if the TENS machine is hired but not used during your labour, as the equipment was unavailable to other clients during your chosen hire period.

5. Safety & Contraindications

  • Consult Your Care Provider: You must consult with your midwife or obstetrician before using the TENS machine to ensure it is appropriate for your specific pregnancy.

  • Contraindications: You must NOT use TENS:

  • Before 37 weeks of pregnancy.

  • If you have a pacemaker or heart rhythm permanent.

  • If you have epilepsy.

  • Over the site of a scar or on broken skin.

  • Proper Use: TENS is for external use only. It must never be used in water (bath or birth pool).

6. Disclaimer

Gather (formerly Caul to Parenting) provides the TENS unit as a tool for comfort during labour. We do not guarantee a specific outcome regarding pain relief. The hirer uses the equipment at their own risk and agrees to indemnify Lucie Kinzett and Gather from any claims resulting from the use or misuse of the device.
